Recent outages at 15,000 car dealerships are creating income security issues for their employees. “I work at a major body shop, and it has really hurt us,” one worker wrote to CNN about the outage. “I don’t know how we’re going to get paid.”From CNN: "At 71, Norm Phillips has worked as a car parts delivery driver at both a Mercedes-Benz dealership and a Honda dealership in New Jersey for more than 21 years. Since CDK’s malfunction, he hadn’t beenable to work at all. Morgan hacker Gery Shalon's arrest by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and subsequent cooperation with the FBI in exchange for massive reductions in sentencing is a fascinating tangle of geopolitical forces and cyber criminals. While in FBI custody, Shalon's empire continued to defraud tens of thousands of victims across Europe.From Bloomberg Businessweek: "[Shalon's] Wall Street hacks were part of an entirely separate scheme to inflate the value of worthless stocks, generating huge profits for Shalon and his gang before prices fell back to earth. 'The charged crimes showcase a brave new world of hacking for profit,' [US Attorney for the Southern District of New York] Bharara said. 'It is no longer hacking merely for a quick payout, but hacking to support a diversified criminal conglomerate.'Even that may have understated the significance of the case, according to agents who worked it. Shalon was a rare catch—a global thinker adept at connecting figures from the dark web’s various fiefdoms with creative schemes that made hundreds of millions of dollars for him and his partners. 15,000 car dealerships across the U.S. are struggling to operate due to the latest high impact cyber attack. Popular software for employee payroll, inventory, customer relations, office operations, customer financing and insurance from CDK Global is down for the third day. From CBS News: "Some dealerships appeared to get creative to continue doing business during the outage. The United States Department of Commerce banned Kaspersky software in the United States saying, "Effective at 12 a.m. EDT on July 20, 2024, in accordance with 15 CFR 7.109(d)(5), Kaspersky, and any of its successors and assignees, is prohibited from entering into any new agreement with U.S. persons." Kaspersky is also banned from providing software updates to U.S. citizens effective September 29th. Chinese company Kuaishou released a text-to-video generative AI platform called Kling that is similar to Sora, but unlike the OpenAI product, Kling is free to the public for testing. In a new report released today, the International Monetary Fund issued new warnings about labor market disruptions AI is expected to cause. From Financial Times: "Earlier automation waves, such as the adoption of robotics, displaced mostly blue-collar and lower-skilled workers, while higher-skilled and white-collar workers are seen as most exposed to AI. However, AI is also capable of powering more intelligent robots and could lead to further automation of blue-collar jobs, too, the IMF warned.
