Job Summary

The Division of Public Safety (DPS) at CU Boulder isencouraging applications for an Assistant Vice Chancellorfor Operations ! This position will provide operationalleadership and strategic direction as it relates to the delivery ofDPS operations in the areas of the event and emergency management,flight operations, and the security operations center (which willbe developed through a phased operational approach).

This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for PublicSafety (AVCDPS) and will work with them to closely manage theoperations budget supporting the vision and mission of DPS and theCU Boulder campus. This position partners with the DPS leadershipteam and participates in campus conversations about the efficientand effective use of public safety operations.

In addition to the AVCDPS, this role will work closely with theAVCDPS’s senior leadership team, campus partners, externalagencies, and other administrative offices on the Boulder campus.This is a senior role, with multi-function responsibilities forpublic safety operations. As part of the AVCDPS’s senior leadershipteam, this person will be a strong leader who provides strategicsupport and serves as a leader with vision around operationalissues and with strategic insight and the proven track record tolead the implementation and prioritization of organizationaloperations.

The successful incumbent in this position will be a thoughtful andstrategic leader, skilled at building relationships and engaging incollaboration with departmental leaders within and outside DPS tounderstand operational needs and identify solutions to those needs.They will consider how to incorporate technological innovation inthe areas of public safety operations and engage in technologysystems and service planning to ensure sustainability of publicsafety operations. They will be able to develop and enforce thecomprehensive policies and standards necessary to ensure integrity,security and standardization within public safety operations.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Strategic Public Safety Operations Leadership andPlanning

  • Serve on the AVCDPS’s Leadership Team
  • Works collaboratively with the AVCDPS, and Public Safetydepartmental leadership to:
    • Determine current divisional operations needs/gaps
    • Discover opportunities to implement innovative solutions
    • Develop a 5-year strategic plan for Public Safety operations,including a projected budget that aligns both with the PublicSafety priorities and the strategic imperatives and budget of theCU Boulder campus
    • Prioritize initiatives to complete the strategic plan
    • Complete the strategic plan
    • Evaluate progress and adjust plan as needed
    • Develop policies, standards and procedures for public safetyoperations that ensures integrity, security and standardization forpublic safety operations.
    • Maintains awareness of public safety operations industryinnovations and potential to integrate innovations into divisionalstrategies

Supervision and Mentorship

  • Provide performance management, mentorship, and professionaldevelopment opportunities for team members
  • Align staff duties with changing division needs
  • Collaborate with divisional departments to ensure that staffresources in this area support departmental needs

DPS Leadership Partnership

  • Engage in open and collaborative discussion with the peerswithin DPS
  • Work with campus partners, to identify, where possible, PublicSafety operations can improve the services that operationsprovides

  • This position may operate University Vehicles, and an activeDriver's License is required.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $215,568annually.

What We Require

  • Masters or JD degree in public safety field, public policy, orrelated field. A combination of education and relevant experiencemay substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • 6+ years of progressively responsible job-related experience,including supervision experience.

  • Ability to influence action in the direction of organizationalpriorities in areas where there is not a direct reportingrelationship.
  • Ability to elicit business requirements for the public safetydivision and formulate solutions that meet business needs.
  • Ability to direct, empower, develop and evaluate staff.
  • Ability to engage in budget planning and justification, as wellas budget reconciliation.
  • Willingness to build awareness of and follow campus policiesand standards around hardware and software compliance, pricing andpurchasing, and security standard processes.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Master's degree in public safety field, public policy,business, or related field.
  • At least six years of experience with progressively increasingresponsibilities in the areas of public safety technology use anddevelopment.
  • Knowledge of national and regional landscape for public safetyin higher education.
  • Previous experience in higher education.
  • Engagement with organizations related to public safety.
  • Proven track record of delivering innovative technologysolutions and cost saving strategies.
